The No. 8 Santa Clara women's soccer team resumed its winning ways this afternoon, defeating Ole Miss, 3-1, on the final day of the Inn at Saint Mary's Classic in South Bend, Ind in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

In a reversal of roles from Friday night's match against Notre Dame, senior Anessa Patton put the Broncos on the board early, scoring from six yards out just two minutes and 36 seconds into the match after collecting a ball in the box from freshman Julie Johnston.  The helper was Johnston's third of the season.

The game remained 1-0 in favor of Santa Clara at the halfway point with the Broncos outshooting the Rebels, 6-3.  Junior goalkeeper Bianca Henninger needed to make just one save in the initial 45 minutes.

Santa Clara busted out of the gates again after the break, scoring just one minute and forty seconds into the second half.  Sophomore Meleana Shim unleashed a 25-yard bomb that beat goalkeeper Sarah Story, struck the bottom of the crossbar, and fell into the goal.

After the second Bronco goal, Ole Miss swung the momentum in its favor by getting off three shots in a span of six minutes, two that Henninger needed to save and another that hit the crossbar.  But at 57:43 of the match, Lauren Matheson helped Santa Clara take a comfortable lead of 3-0 by scoring her first goal of the season.

At 62:35, the Rebels' Dylan Jordan cut the Broncos' lead to two, executing a give-and-go play in the box with Erin Emerson.  Ole Miss also had two corner kick chances near the 75' mark that Santa Clara was able to thwart.

At the end of 90 minutes, Shim's goal held up as the game-winner and the Broncos held on to their two-goal lead, improving to 3-1-1 on the season.  Henninger finished with three saves compared to Story's two and Santa Clara outshot the Rebels, 10-8.

Henninger, Shim, and Johnston were selected to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the tournament.

The Broncos return to the Bay Area next weekend, taking on Pacific and Georgia in the Stanford/Nike Invitational.
