Softball to Host UMKC Tuesday for Doubleheader

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Coming off back-to-back big wins, Santa Clara softball hosts UMKC on Tues., March 24 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Last week Santa Clara dropped its first two games of the Santa Clara Marriott Round Robin but came back with a 6-0 win over Brown and a 10-0 win over Manhattan. The Broncos are now 10-21 on the season.

"UMKC is a decent hitting ball club with some speed and power peppered in their line up.," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "We will need to have the same approach as all of our games to beat them. The pitchers have to get ahead in count and keep mixing. We'll have to play good defense and have quality at bats at the plate. The players are excited to play over spring break and have a break from the classroom."

Santa Clara is hitting .268 (222-827) as a team with 40 doubles, four triples, and 18 home runs. They post a 4.74 ERA with 83 strikeouts and 79 walks in 204.0 innings.

Breezy Bernard leads the way with a .340 (33-97) batting average and 10 doubles. She is tied for the team lead with 18 RBI and has hit one home run while scoring five runs. Ellie Fisher is hitting .333 (31-93) with a team-high .451 OBP and 18 walks. She has scored a team-best 19 runs while hitting a double and a triple to go with seven RBI. Fisher also leads the team with 13 steals in 15 tries. Jordan Newell is batting .326 (28-86) with four doubles and four home runs. She has added 17 RBI and 13 runs scored. Gianetta France leads the Broncos with six home runs and is tied with Bernard for the team-lead with 18 RBI. She has added four doubles and 12 runs scored.

Ciara Gonzales leads the team with eight wins and a 3.64 ERA in a team-high 94.1 innings pitched. She also has a team-best 36 strikeouts. Gonzales has appeared in 24 games and made 16 starts while tossing seven complete games and one shutout. Briana Rios has appeared in 14 games and made seven starts with one shutout. She has tossed 47.2 innings with nine strikeouts. McCall James has thrown 47.0 innings and has the only Santa Clara save of the season. James has appeared in 17 games and made six starts while throwing two complete games and one shutout. She has fanned 25 on the season.

UMKC is 13-14 on the season. The Kangaroos are hitting .312 (246-789) as a team with 46 doubles, six triples, and 34 home runs. They post a 5.34 ERA with 138 strikeouts and 70 walks in 179.2 innings. They are outscoring opponents 181-166 on the season.

Cinda Ramos leads the team in hitting with a .400 (38-95) batting average. She has scored 18 runs to go along with five home runs, five doubles, and 23 RBI. Katie Kelley leads the Kangaroos with 11 home runs and 27 RBI while scoring 14 runs and hitting a team-best 13 doubles. Kelley is hitting .396 (38-96) on the year. Emily Bevan is tops on the team with 22 runs scored. She is batting .277 (23-83) with five doubles, three home runs, and 19 RBI. Brooke Parker is hitting .250 (13-52) but leads the team with 14 stolen bases in 16 attempts.

Kelley has thrown a team-high 83.2 innings and leads the way with five wins and a 4.94 ERA. She has appeared in 18 games and made 10 starts while throwing six complete games and one shutout with a save. Kelley has a team-high 69 strikeouts and has walked 33. Amber Grove is 3-4 with a 5.25 ERA in 34.2 innings. She has struck out 20 and walked 17 in 14 games, including five starts with one complete game. Ramos is 5-3 with a 5.80 ERA in 14 games and 11 starts. She has thrown two complete games and one shutout while tossing 54.1 innings. Ramos has struck out 47 against 18 walks.
