Bonilla’s Five RBI Lead Broncos Past Spartans

SAN JOSE, Calif. – In the final non-conference game of the season, Santa Clara softball beat San Jose State by a final of 7-6. The Broncos are now 15-32 on the season.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., May 1 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. vs. BYU

Ciara Gonzales (12-14) started for Santa Clara and picked up a win in 6.0 innings. Gonzales allowed six runs, three earned, on 12 hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Micaela Vierra picked up her first career save. Geenamarie Bonilla was 3-4 with two doubles, five RBI, and a run scored to lead the offense. Amanda Delfino was 1-1 with a run scored and an RBI while Jenna Krummen was 2-2 with a walk and two runs scored.

Allison Lang (13-9) started for San Jose State and picked up a loss in 3.1 innings. Lang allowed seven runs, five earned, on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Erin Rodriguez was 2-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the offense. Michelle Cox was 2-4 with two runs scored while Jessica Madrid was 2-3 with an RBI.

The Broncos got off to a fast start when Ellie Fisher singled through the left side to lead off the game and Delfino was hit by a pitch. After a passed ball moved both runners up, Bonilla doubled to right center to give the Broncos the quick 2-0 lead. After a pair of strikeouts Casandra Padilla singled down the left field line to bring in the third run of the inning.

Santa Clara got the offense going again in the top of the second. Ashley Haney reached on an error and Krummen singled. A wild pitch moved both runners up and Fisher walked to load the bases. Delfino hit a sacrifice fly to left and Bonilla knocked in her third run of the game with a single to left to put runners on the corners.

In the top of the fourth Santa Clara made it a 6-0 lead with two more RBI from Bonilla. With two down and Fisher on first, Delfino singled up the middle to set things up for Bonilla who doubled in both runs.

After getting a run in the fourth, the Spartans scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to get back in the game. The first two batters reached via singles and after an out, an error loaded the bases. A run came in on a fielder's choice and a double by Rodriguez made it a 7-4 game.

A one out single for San Jose State led to two more runs in the sixth. Nicole Schultz made it to third on a double to right by Cox and came in to score on a sac fly by Madrid. Jessie Hufstetler followed with an RBI single to left to make it a one-run game.

Vierra came on and got the Spartans in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.
