Santa Clara Sweeps CSUB, Loses Close One to San Francisco During the Weekend

Jan. 31, 2010

The Santa Clara women's tennis team earned their first win and their first loss of the season this weekend, defeating Cal State Bakersfield 7-0 on Saturday and losing to San Francisco today, 4-3. The Broncos are now 1-1 for the season and 0-1 in the WCC.

Santa Clara came out strong from the start of the match against CSUB to get the 7-0 shut-out victory. "It felt really good to get the first win, all of our girls played really well down the line," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "CSUB is a different team from last year, and it was good for our young team to get in their first collegiate match of the season and earn the win."

At San Francisco, the Broncos kicked off the match with a rearrangement of the doubles pairings due to the absence of sophomore captain Kacie Wagner, who had taken ill. Freshmen duo Maggie McGeorge and Kelly Lamble stepped up for the Broncos and pulled off a close win at the No. 2 doubles position against San Francisco's Julia Wartenburger and Yurie Hashiguchi, 9-8 (8-6) to give the Broncos the edge and the doubles point.

Freshmen Alex Zaniewski and Maggie McGeorge earned the two wins for the day in singles play. Zaniewski defeated San Francisco's Julia Wartenburger, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 singles position and McGeorge breezed past Melinda Akerbrandt, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles position.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, their strong efforts weren't enough to earn the win and the Dons won the final two singles matches to clinch the 4-3 win.

"Today was a tough one," said Cabell. "Losing Kacie for the match was a big loss since she is such a leader for the team, but I'm really proud of how well our girls came together against San Francisco. Kelly had a really strong performance during her doubles match to give us the doubles point, and Maggie defeated a player that she had lost to during the fall. We played really tough today and I think that toughness will give us a lot of the necessary confidence we need when we face them again later in the season."

The Broncos will travel to Cal Poly on February 6th to take on the Mustangs. First serve is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
