Santa Clara Set For Match Versus Marquette

March 17, 2010

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team (9-3 overall) will take on Marquette at home (11-8 overall) this Friday at 1 p.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center. The match is slated to be the only one of the weekend for the Broncos having just finished winter quarter exams.

Santa Clara is currently in the midst of a five-game win streak after dropping the first two matches of its ongoing 10-game home stand. The Golden Eagles will be finishing their three-game road trip to the Bay Area after having defeated San Jose State, 6-1, and falling to San Francisco, 4-3.

"Marquette will be a really tough match for us," says head coach Ben Cabell. "They're a very good team and they're on the edge of being nationally-ranked like us. Hopefully the team will be more relaxed and focused since finals are over, but it will be a close match one way or the other."

The Broncos are currently tops by virtue of overall record in the West Coast Conference and have a 3-2 record over conference opponents. No. 55 Saint Mary's (8-4, 3-0) is right on the heels of Santa Clara, while No. 50 Pepperdine is 5-9 overall and 1-0 in conference.

The match against Marquette was originally scheduled for 5 p.m. but has since been moved up. First serve will be at 1 p.m.
