Flexing its muscle for the first time since it received its national ranking of No. 74 earlier in the week, Santa Clara's women defeated UC Riverside 7-0 on Saturday afternoon in Santa Clara. Santa Clara moves to 11-4 and 3-2 in the WCC while UC Riverside falls to 4-8 and 0-4 in the Big West.
In its next action, Santa Clara hosts Utah State on April 1 at 2 pm.
"What a beautiful day to return from spring break and play our first match with a national ranking," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell of the 78 degree sunny weather in the Bay Area. "It was difficult playing singles before doubles, but the girls responded really well and played hard throughout the match."
Santa Clara won all five singles points to start the match, with No. 1 Kelly Lamble, No. 3 Maggie McGeorge, No. 3 Maggie McGeorge, No. 4 Jessica Agra, No. 5 Carmen Pham and No. 6 Kimmi Cox sweeping their matches in two sets.
Santa Clara'a No. 1 double team of Kacie Wagner and Kimmi Cox made quick work of Donna McCullough and Nadia Sakhakorn of UCR, winning 8-1.
