Volleyball Defeats Portland 3-1

Santa Clara senior Lindsy Davigeadono knocked down a season-high 19 kills, hitting .500, to help the Broncos to a 3-1 win over Portland Thursday night in their first WCC home match. SCU won in set scores, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-20. Santa Clara is 11-8 and 1-3 in WCC play while Portland falls to 5-14 and 1-3 in the WCC. Santa Clara hosts Gonzaga on Sat., Oct. 17 at 1 pm in its annual DIG PINK match - wear pink Saturday!

"Lindsy's attacking was really on and she gave us many outs when we needed a big swing. She competed very well," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace. "Kayla came off the bench and provided a lot of energy, with some on-the-job training and played aggressively. I'm excited to get our first win in the WCC this year - it feels good," continued Wallace. "We look forward to playing again on Saturday; and working towards our next win to try to get something going."

SCU hit .235 in the match with seven team blocks and three aces. Portland hit .218 with eight team blocks and one ace. Davigeadono hit .500 with 19 kills and two block assists. Dana Knudsen hit .278 with 10 kills and three block assists. Kayla Lommori had 11 kills and an ace. Bridget O'Hara grabbed 20 digs and Libby Morrison collected 12. Emily Burke had 40 assists before she went down with an ankle injury and Samantha Selsky had nine assists in her stay.

In set one, the two teams went back and forth - tying it up five times when Dana Knudsen knocked her second kill of the set off the block to take a 7-6 Bronco lead; and then Knudsen crushed one to the back-row to give Santa Clara an 8-6 lead. Davigeadono scored her third kill of the set to give SCU a 9-7 lead. A smart play by Davigeadono, a tip over the net, gave SCU a 12-9 lead. SCU went up 14-11 on a kill by Krista Kelley and then took a 16-12 lead on another Knudsen kill and a Pilot setting error. Emily Burke dumped the ball into the Pilot donut to give SCU an 18-13 lead. Santa Clara went up 22-17 on a Pilot service error, another Davigeadono kill and a Portland setting error. Santa Clara won three of the next six points to win game one 25-20. SCU hit .324 and Portland hit .209. Davigeadono hit a perfect 1.000 with five kills. Knudsen had five kills, hitting .833. Bridget O'Hara collected eight digs.

In set two, Portland jumped out early to a 5-3 lead. A Knudsen kill and a Pilot error and SCU tied it up 5-5. Portland went up 12-9 on two straight Bronco errors. The Pilots went up 17-11 on a kill and two SCU hitting errors. SCU started clawing back on three straight Pilot errors, 18-15 Portland, when the Pilots called timeout. Portland went up 21-17 on two errors by SCU when Wallace called timeout. The two teams traded points when the Pilots were called for a hitting error to make it 22-19 Portland. Portland won three of the next four points to win set two 25-. SCU hit .037 and Portland hit .308. Lommori and Davigeadono both collected three kills each.

In set three Davigedono knocked a kill to the back row, Burke served an ace and a Pilot hitting error gave SCU an early 4-0 lead when Portland called timeout. Another Pilot error and SCU went up 5-0. Davigeadono crushed the ball to the middle; and Davigeadono and Tanya Schmidt teamed up to block a Pilot ball and SCU went up 7-1. Lommori came flying in for a back-row attack that crushed the Pilot court to give SCU a 10-3 lead. Lommori continued to shine, knocking a kill off of a Pilot arm to give SCU a 12-5 lead. The Pilots scored on a kill and then they called timeout with SCU up 12-6. SCU went up 16-9 on kills by Knudsen, Douglas and Lommori. Portland scored three straight points but a Davigeadono kill and a Lommori ace quieted the rally, making it 18-12 Broncos. A Douglas kill made it 19-14 Broncos. Again, the Pilots rallied, scoring two straight before Davigeadono crushed yet another ball to the back row and a Bronco team block made it 21-16 Broncos. A kill by Knudsen in the middle and a Pilot error made it 23-18 SCU. Douglas smashed the ball to the back-row for a kill to make it 24-20 SCU. SCU won set three 25-21 on a kill by Schmidt. SCU hit .167, but Portland hit .094. Davigeadono scored five kills and Lommori added three at key times. O'Hara added five digs in the set.

Davigeadono opened set four with a kill off the arm of a Pilot blocker to give SCU the early lead. The two teams tied it up twice when a Davigeadono kill deep in the back row and a block solo by her gave SCU a 4-2 lead. After Burke went out with an injury, the two teams tied it up three times when SCU took a 12-7 lead on two straight Pilot setting errors, two kills by Lommori and another Pilot hitting error. The Pilots called time and out of the huddle scored three straight points before Davigeadono scored a kill in the middle of the court, making it 13-10 SCU. Douglas pushed a kill to the back row and Davigeadono crushed yet another back row kill to make it 15-10 SCU. The two traded points and Davigeadono knotched another kill to give SCU a 17-12 lead. Knudsen hit a kill off the block, 19-14 SCU. The Pilots knocked it out of bounds to give SCU a 21-17 lead. Davigeadono gave SCU a 23-19 on a back-row kill. Knudsen tapped the ball over the net to give SCU a 25-20 win in set four and the match. SCU hit .400 in set four and Portland hit .281.
