Santa Clara at Pepperdine Boxscore
Winning the first two sets, Santa Clara made it exciting at Pepperdine on Saturday, but came away with a five-set match win - finishing the Waves off 17-15 in the fifth set. Set scores in the Bronco win were 25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 17-25 and 17-15.
Santa Clara moves to 13-9 and 3-4 in the WCC. Pepperdine is 11-9 and 4-3 in the WCC.
Santa Clara, which finished with advantages of .308-.239 in hitting and 12-9 in blocks, got 18 kills and six blocks from Lindsy Davigeadono, 15 kills from Kayla Lommori, and 10 kills and six blocks from Dana Knudsen. Samantha Selsky added a career-high 51 assists and six digs. Katherine Douglas had nine kills and 11 digs; Bridget O'Hara had 19 dogs and Libby Morrison collected 12 digs.
In the first set the two teams tied at 1-1 and error by the Waves gave the Broncos a 2-1 lead. SCU never looked back. SCU took a 6-2 lead on an ace by Libby Morrison. They went up 10-5 on a kill by Kayla Lommori and then 18-12 on a kill by Knudsen. SCU won set one 25-16 on a kill by Davigeadono and another by Douglas. SCU hit .343 and Pepperdine hit .089. Davigeadono had four kills as did Lommori.
In set two SCU took a 2-1 lead on a Waves error. SCU went up 4-2 on another Waves error, but the two tied it up 5-5 on a Bronco service error. Pepperdine went up 7-5 on two Bronco errors. SCU got within one, 8-7 Waves, on a kill by Lommori. SCU took a 9-8 lead on two straight PU errors; and then pushed it to 12-8 on a team block by Schmidt and Davigeadono, a kill by Davigeadono and an ace by Selsky. After the Waves scored a point, another error on Pepperdine's side of the net made it 13-9 SCU. SCU pushed its lead to 14-10 on a kill by Davigeadono, but the Waves scored three of the next four points as the SCU lead was cut to two, 15-13 SCU. SCU scored the next points on two straight Pepperdine errors, to go ahead 17-13. Pepperdine called timeout. Santa Clara then scored four of the next six points to take a 21-15 kill. Santa Clara went up 22-16 on an ace by Douglas. SCU called timeout, up 23-17. Santa Clara won set two on a PU service error and then a kill by Schmidt. SCU hit .214 and Pepperdine hit .053.
In set three Pepperdine jumped out early, taking a 9-5 lead, after the two teams were tied up 2-2. SCU scratched back within two, 10-8 Pepperdine, but then the Waves scored three of the next four points. SCU scored two straight points on kills by Knudsen, making it 13-11 Pepperdine. The Broncos stayed within two, it was then 14-12 Pepperdine. Pepperdine continued to build on its lead and won set three 25-20. SCU hit .344 and Pepperdine hit .459.
In set four SCU went up early 5-3 on a kill by Douglas. Pepperdine tied it up 5-5 and then gave the lead back to Santa Clara on a service error. Pepperdine took an 11-9 lead a kill. Steadily Pepperdine kept chipping away, going up 19-14 and then 23-16. Pepperdine won three of the last four points, taking set four, 25-17. SCU hit .212 and Pepperdine hit .417.
In set five, Santa Clara took a 4-1 lead before Pepperdine called timeout. The Broncos led 11-8 and 13-11 when Pepperdine tied it up 13-13. Playing it in its second straight WCC five-set match at home (lost 3-2 to USF on Thursday), Pepperdine was determined. The two tied it up at 14 and 15 before a kill by Knudsen gave Santa Clara the lead for kill. Selsky dumped the mall to end the match and give the Broncos the win in set five, 17-15. SCU hit .500 and Pepperdine hit .208.
