Volleyball Falls 3-2 to No. 22 San Diego

Final Stats

Santa Clara fell in five sets to No. 22 San Diego on Thursday night at the Leavey Center in a hard fought battle. Santa Clara moved to 14-10 and 4-5 in WCC play and USD moved to 16-5 and 8-2 in the WCC.

SCU hit .199 with six team blocks and three aces. USD hit .312 with 6.5 team blocks and five aces. Santa Clara had three hitters in double figures with Lindsy Davigeadono collecting 13 kills, Dana Knudsen 11 and Katherine Douglas 10. Bridget O'Hara had 13 digs and Libby Morrison 11. Samantha Selsky collected 43 assists, seven kills and six digs.

In the first set, the two teams knotted it up at 3-3 after SCU won three of the first four points. After USD went up by two, Santa Clara tied it at 5-5 and 6-6 on kills by Davigeadono and Selsky, respectively. After a back-row kill by Douglas and two Torero errors, Santa Clara went up 9-6. Santa Clara inched ahead to 12-8 on a kill by Lommori and another by Tanya Schmidt. USD scored two straight to make it 13-11 SCU, but a Davigeadono kill to the back row gave Santa Clara the ball back, up 14-11. Another Davigeadono kill off the block and an ace by Libby Morrison and USD called time with SCU up 16-12. Selsky dumped the ball into the donut, SCU 17-12. The two traded points. After a another dump by Selsky to the middle and another back-row attack by Douglas gave SCU a 20-14 lead when USD called a quick timeout. Lommori crushed one of the team block to put SCU up 21-15. Selsky continued to shine, slapping an ace down in the middle. USD scored twice, but a Schmidt kill stopped the rally with SCU up 23-17. An error by the Toreros and a kill by Davigeadono and SCU had set one in the bag, 25-18. SCU hit .552 and USD hit .310. Davigeadono hit .714 with six kills and Douglas added four. O'Hara added five digs and Morrison four.

In set two USD went up 4-1 on two straight service aces. With USD up 7-2, SCU called timeout. USD went up 9-4 on a Torero kill and then 12-5. Down 13-5, SCU called another timeout. Knudsen came out of the huddle by posting a kill off the block and then two straight USD errors made it 13-8 USD. USD went up 16-9 on a kill. USD continued to dominate in set two, taking a 22-12 lead on two kills and an SCU error. SCU won five of the next six points when USD called timeout with a 23-17 lead. USD came out of the timeout and the two teams traded points before USD put the ball on the floor to win set two 25-18. SCU hit .160 and USD hit .500.

In set three the teams were knotted up five times when USD went up by two, 8-6, on straight kills. The two teams traded points, but a Bronco in the net pushed it to 10-7 USD. Selsky came right back to dump the ball over the net for a winner, a Torero error and a team block by the Broncos tied up 10-10. USD rallied off four straight to take a 14-10, but SCU came back to score three of its own. USD scored a couple before Schmidt crushed the ball, making it 16-14. USD took a 19-15 lead on a Bronco service error. A kill by Douglas, a miss-set by USD and a kill by Knudsen and SCU was down 19-18 when USD called timeout. SCU tied it up, 19-19, on a kill by Knudsen and then took a 20-19 on a kill off the arm of Selsky. USD tied it up 20-20 and took the lead on a Torero kill off the block. Wallace called timeout with USD up 21-20. Knudsen tied it up with a kill to the right side. Selsky gave SCU a 22-21 lead on a swing by Selsky, but USD tied it up quickly at 22-22. USD took a 23-22 lead on a Bronco error, but a Lommori kill tied it up 23-23. Davigeadono checked back in and broke her wrists over the net for a kill at the net to make it 24-23 SCU. Timeout USD. Out of the timeout a team block by Schmidt and Lommori that sent the ball crashing to the back row alone gave SCU a 25-23 win. SCU hit .093 and USD hit .093. Knudsen had five kills and Morrison and O'Hara both collected five digs a piece.

Again, the two tied things up numerically 1-4 before USD took a 9-4 lead on three Bronco errors and two kills. The two teams traded points. Krista Kelley bounced off the bench to smack down a kill and a USD error made it 12-7 USD. Again the two traded points with Kelley smacking down another kill. USD pushed its lead to 16-9. Davigeadono came back with two straight kills. Down 18-11 SCU called timeout. Time didn't help as USD scored three of the next four points to take a 21-12 lead. The two traded points and then USD scored once, 23-13 USD. USD scored the final two of three points of the set to win it, 25-14. SCU hit .147 and USD hit .394.

Tied up 2-2 in the deciding set, USD took a 5-2 lead on three straight kills when SCU called timeout. Moving forward USD took an 8-4 lead on the switchover.
