Volleyball defeats Gonzaga 3-1

Final Stats

Santa Clara defeated Gonzaga 3-1 on Thursday night. Set scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-16. Santa Clara will play its final road match of the year on Saturday at Portland at 1 pm.

Santa Clara is 15-11 and 5-6 in the WCC this year. Gonzaga, who defeated Santa Clara 3-2 on Oct. 17, is 9-16 and 4-7 in the WCC.

SCU hit .196 with three service aces and six team blocks. Gonzaga hit .182 with four service aces and 10.5 team blocks. Individually SCU was led by four hitters who scored double-figure kills. Katherine Douglas hit .268 with a team-leading 17 kills, collecting 10 digs. Tanya Schmidt had 12 kills, hitting .545 wth four block assists. Krista Kelley collected 11 kills, hitting .259; and Lindsy Davigeadono had 13 kills. Samantha Selsky had 47 assists. Bridget O'Hara had 18 digs.

In the first set the two teams were tied 12-12 when Santa Clara went on a 5-1 run to take a 17-13 lead. Up 22-21, Krista Kelley knocked down a kill to give SCU a 23-21 lead. Off a kill by Davigeadono SCU went up 24-21 and looked poised to win the set. GU scored two points before another Davigeadono kill gave SCU the win in set one, 25-23.

In set two SCU took an early 6-2 lead. The Zags tied it up at 12-12 before they scored two more points to take a 14-12 lead. GU took a 20-16 lead and scored five of the next nine points to win set two 25-20.

In set three once again SCU took an early lead, jumping out to a 5-2 advantage. After leading most of the set, GU tied it up at 13-13 and then took a 16-13 lead with SCU calling timeout. SCU scored four straight points to take a 17-16 lead before the Zags tied it up twice before a Tanya Schmidt kill gave the Broncos an 18-17 lead - which held the rest of the set. SCU won set three 25-21.

The two played close before SCU took a 13-9 lead on a 5-1 run in set four. Up 17-12 Gonzaga took a quick timeout before SCU scored two of the next four points to take a 19-14 lead on a kill by Kelley. SCU took a 21-15 lead on a team block by Schmidt and Davigeadono, and another kill by Kelley. After an attack error by the Zags and a kill by Schmidt, SCU went up 23-16. A kill by Davigeadono gave SCU the set four win, 25-16, and the match.
