Santa Clara volleyball wins at LMU, 3-1

Los Angeles, Calif. - Scoring 14 of the last 15 points in set four, Santa Clara won at LMU Thursday night, 3-1. Set scores were 28-26, 25-19, 24-26 and 25-17.

Santa Clara moves to 12-9 and 2-4 in the WCC. LMU falls to 9-11 and 0-6 in WCC play this season.

Santa Clara plays at Pepperdine at 1 pm on Sat., Oct. 24. Pepperdine lost in 5 to USF on Thursday night. Set scores were 20-25, 28-26, 26-24, 28-26 and 15-12. The match featured 46 ties and 16 lead changes. Pepperdine is 11-8 and 4-2 in the WCC.

SCU hit .318 and had three service aces. LMU hit .223 with three service aces. Individually the Broncos were led by senior Lindsy Davigeadono, who hit .621 with 20 kills and four digs. Freshman Katherine Douglas had 16 kills, hitting .467. Freshman Dana Knudsen collected seven kills, hitting .267, but scored five block solos and a block assist. Junior Krista Kelley had seven kills, hitting .263. Douglas added 12 digs and Bridget O'Hara collected 17. Freshman Samantha Selsky had 54 assists and six digs to go along with two kills.

In the first set Santa Clara went up 8-3 to begin the match. The two tied it up at 11-11 and then LMU went up momentarily, taking a 13-11 lead. Santa Clara took a 14-13 lead on three straight LMU ball handling errors; and then went up 17-14 on a Lion service error and a Knudsen solo block. The two teams tied it up five times before Santa Clara went up 25-24 on another block solo by Knudsen. LMU called a quick timeout to regroup before the two knotted it up 26-26 on an LMU kill. SCU took the lead, 27-26, on a Lion service error and then won the first set on another ball handling error by the Lions. SCU hit .222 and LMU hit .263. Individually Douglas scored six kills, hitting .500 and Davigeadono posted four, hitting .375. Davigeadono and Bridget O'Hara both had three digs.

In the second set the two teams tied it up three times before SCU took a 6-5 lead on a kill by Douglas before they tied it at 6-6. SCU went up 9-6 on a kill by Knudsen, a block by Lommori. SCU took a 10-7 lead on a kill by Knudsen. After an LMU service error, SCU went up 11-8 and then 14-10 on two Douglas kills. SCU took an 18-12 lead on another Knudsen kill and a Lion error; and then a 19-13 lead on a Lommori kill the back row. Another Lommori kill gave SCU a 20-14 lead; and Douglas' attacking winner made it 21-14 SCU when LMU called time. They came back and scored three straight points before Santa Clara called timeout. Santa Clara continued to plod away and won set two 25-19 on a Lion service error. SCU hit .444 and LMU hit .250. Douglas added five kills, Davigeadono had four and O'Hara picked up eight digs.

In set three the two teams started out slow after the intermission, tying it up six times before LMU took back its home court and rallied to an 11-7 lead when Wallace called timeout. The two traded points out of the timeout twice with LMU taking a 13-9 lead before Douglas smacked it to the ground to make it 13-10 LMU. SCU pulled within two, 14-12 LMU, on an ace by Libby Morrison. LMU continued to work, taking a 17-14 lead on a kill and an SCU error. Behind two Kelley kills, Santa Clara pulled within one to make it 17-16 LMU. An attack error by LMU and then another Kelley kill and the set was tied 18-18. The two teams went on to tie it up seven times, but the Lions knocked down two straight kill to come out on top in set three, 26-24. SCU hit .250 and LMU hit .306.

In set four LMU took a quick 3-0 lead. A kill by Tanya Schmidt and another by Davigeadono and then LMU scored on a kill of its own to take a 4-2 lead. LMU moved out to a 6-3 lead before it committed a service error, but took a 7-4 lead on a kill by LMU. Douglas crushed the ball, making it 8-5 LMU. LMU then pushed its lead to 12-8. SCU scored two straight on Davigeadono kills, but LMU knocked down a few kills to take a 16-11 lead. SCU then scored five straight on three Davigeadono kills, an LMU error and a kill by Knudsen. Another Lion error and a block solo by Knudsen and SCU had rallied from five down to take an 18-16 lead. Davigeadono crushed another kill to the back row to put SCU up 19-16 when the Lions called timeout finally. Down 16-11, SCU had gone on to score nine straight points to take a 20-16 lead - mainly on the swing of Davigeadono. SCU took a 21-16 lead on an ace by Schmidt before she served the next into the net. Santa Clara continued to play with fire in its belly, winning the set on a kill by Knudsen and then two straight block solos by Knudsen, winning the set 25-17. SCU scored 14 of the last 15 points of the set! SCU hit .414 and LMU hit .061.
