No. 62 Broncos Race Against Cal Poly Mustangs

By Rico Chow, '12

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 62 men's tennis team travels to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to take on Big West foe Cal Poly Mustangs on Sun., Feb. 27. The Broncos enter this weekend with 6-4 overall record, including a 5-2 victory against No. 60 UCSB on Feb. 21.

Cal Poly's match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at San Luis Obispo, Calif.

The Mustangs enter the match with the Broncos with a 5-1 record this season, looking to continue their three winning streak. All of their matches were played away and they will host the first home-opener this weekend.

The Broncos outraced the Mustangs in the last meeting on Jan. 31, 2010 with a 6-1 victory. However, the match was not as easy as the score portrays.

SCU started off the day with hard fought victories at No. 2 and 3 doubles positions. Pairs of Brian Brogan and Jay Wong at No. 2 position, and Andrew Kells and Grant Fleming playing the No. 3 spot came away with 8-6 and 8-5 wins, respectively, to give the Broncos a 1-0 edge going into singles.

On the singles side of play, every match was pushed to the limit, but Santa Clara was able to make big plays to come away with the points. Brogan, Kells, and Nicolas Vinel forced their matches in to three sets to secure singles points with victories. Wong and Tom Pham were able to take care of Cal Poly's Alexander Sonesson and Robert Foy in two sets winning 6-4, 6-4 and 7-5, 6-2 respectively.

Kyle Dandan had bitter defeat in both No. 1 singles action and at the doubles position with Nicholas Vinel last year. He is looking for revenge in front of Cal Poly's home crowd this weekend.

Go Broncos!
