By Rico Chow '12

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 47-ranked Santa Clara (second seed) men's tennis team took on the No. 34-ranked San Diego (first seed) in the West Coast Conference Championship match Saturday afternoon. Despite a great run throughout the weekend, the Toreros defeated SCU 4-1 to win the WCC title. Santa Clara exits the tournament at 15-8 on the season (4-3 WCC).

The Broncos had a difficult time getting things going on Saturday on the doubles side of play. At No. 1 doubles, Nicolas Vinel and Maxime Armengaud fell to San Diego's Dean Jackson and Patrick Pohlmann, 8-4. Although Bronco doubles team Kyle Dandan and Tom Pham were leading at the No. 2 spot with a 7-5 score, Santa Clara edged out of the doubles point as John Lamble and Eugene Muchynski fell to Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy, 8-3.

Santa Clara worked to come back in singles action as Vinel grabbed a win at the No. 5 position to keep SCU in the match. Despite a strong effort the rest of the way, the Broncos were edged out in the end as Dandan and Pham fell at No. 1 and 4 singles, respectively.

The Broncos had won six straight matches, the longest winning streak of the season coming into the match. SCU finishes this season with an astonishing 9-1 home record and as the runner-up at WCC tournament two years in a row.
