Theo Nasser talks Bronco Water Polo's upcoming season and gives fans the scoop on his favorite speedo

SANTA CLARA, Calif. The men's water polo team is off to a great start, posting a 3-1 record. SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCB) had a chance to catch up with Theo Nasser (TN) before the season opener and talked to him about his goals for this year. The Broncos talent this year ensures for a promising season.

SCB: During the off- season, what did you spend your time at home doing?

TN: This past offseason I was a coach for a local youth swim team.  I worked 3-4 times a week when I was not in class or in the pool.  When I could, I also try and go to Giants, Warrior, or 49er games with some friends year-round.  Have to make time to represent Bay Area Sports, since we have the best in the country! From a pool perspective, we still train about four times a week in the water and three times a week in the weight room in the offseason.  Pool practices are usually a little lighter than usual, but that is only because we focus on our sessions in the weight room.

SCB: What game are you most looking forward to this season and why?

TN: I am looking forward to playing Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo. on October 7th.  It is our first time in program history traveling to Colorado to play them at their indoor pool.  It will be a challenge to play in the high altitude, but everyone is excited to play a league opponent in a new environment that no one on our team has experienced before.  I am also excited for our game against Davis on November 11th at home.  Davis is one of our rivals and every game we play against them is extremely competitive.  It will be our last home game of the year so hopefully we can send our seniors off on a positive note.

SCB: How old were you when you started to play water polo and have you always made it a goal of yours to play in college?

TN: I started playing water polo when I was in seventh grade.  I grew up playing football, but after my first season playing club in the pool, I decided to make the permanent switch.  At first, water polo was just an excuse for exercise and to play a club sport with my friends, but once I reached high school I realized playing Division 1 could one day become an actuality.  By the end of my sophomore year in high school, I knew I wanted to play for Santa Clara after I graduated.

SCB: What do you hope you and your team can accomplish this year?

TN: It is always a team goal to improve throughout the year and peak by conference championships.  We are a very young team, and from the outside are seen as underdogs in the league.  It would be great to upset some teams throughout the season, which would give us a strong seed going into the conference tournament where we can hopefully do some damage.

SCB: What is your favorite part about being on the SCU men's water polo team?

TN: My favorite part about being on this team is my teammates.  From top to bottom, our whole team is extremely close.  A lot of us live together and hang out when we are not training in the water.  Whether its a team dinner, or a FIFA tournament, we enjoy each other's company.  This also helps with our team chemistry and cohesiveness in the pool.

SCB: Describe your favorite speedo.

TN: I don't necessarily have a favorite or lucky speedo, but it is always a fun time of year when we receive our new suits and gear from our coach at the beginning of each season.  This past year our suit had a picture of a Bronco on it with the Bronco Bench Foundation patch on the side as well.  We will see what coach designed for us this year.
