PULLMAN, Wash. – Looking to build off the momentum of a team and individual title from last week, the Santa Clara women's golf team shot a second round 296 to move into fourth place after 36 holes today at the Washington State Cougar Cup played at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
After shooting a 312 (+24) over the first 18 holes, the Broncos improved 16 strokes and jumped three spots in the team standings with their 8-over-par 296 over the second 18 holes. With a two-round total of 608, Santa Clara trails tournament host Washington State (588) by 20 strokes for the top spot heading into Tuesday's final round. West Coast Conference members Gonzaga (594) and BYU (601) sit in second and third place.
Junior Kaci McCartan, who took individual honors at last week's Boise State Bronco Invitational, carded her third sub-par round of the young season with a 1-under 71 in today's second round. She bounced back from a first round 81 and is tied with teammate Taylor Camany, who shot rounds of 77 and 75, for 15th place at 8-over.
Freshman Annie Freman shot an even-par 72 over the first round and was 6-over (78) in the second to finish the day in a tie for 10th place. Freman has finished among the top 10 in each of her first two collegiate tournaments. Washington State's Mallory Kent will take a five-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round after identical rounds of 2-under 70 today.
Sophomores Meghan Shain and Ashley Noda completed the Broncos lineup at the tournament. Both shot a first round 84 but improved over the second round to put the Broncos within striking distance of a second straight tournament title. Shain carded a 2-over 74 in the second round is tied for 28th place at 12-over while Noda notched a second round 4-over 76 to place in a tie for 34th at +14 (158).
Final round action tees off with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday. Live stats will be updated on www.golfstat.com through the completion of the 18 holes.
