Women's Golf in Sixth After First Day of Competition

SPRINGVILLE, Utah – Freshman Annie Freman led the Santa Clara women's golf team to a sixth place finish after the first day of competition at the 13-team Hobble Creek Invitational on Monday.

The Broncos trail tournament host and fellow West Coast Conference member BYU by seven strokes for fifth place after the first 36 holes after scoring a 618 (+53). WCC foes San Francisco (+22) and Gonzaga (+32) placed first and second after the first day at the Hobble Creek Golf Course.

Freeman, the only freshman on SCU's roster, shot a 2-over 73 over the second 18 holes to tie for 11th place, eight strokes behind tournament leader Lea Garner of BYU. Senior Taylor Camany tied for fourth place after a first-round 73 but stumbled to a second round 79, one stroke behind teammate Freeman and 10 shots off the lead in a 14th place tie.

With rounds of 78 and 79, sophomore Meghan Shain finished the day tied for 29th at 15-over-par. Kaci McCartan tied for 34th at 16-over and Sadie Strain placed 53rd at 21-over after the first two rounds of play. The tournament started with 77 players competing.

Final round action is set to begin Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. PST. Live stats for the third round can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
