BREMERTON, Wash. – The Santa Clara women's golf team picked an inopportune time to post its highest score of the spring. The Broncos' score of 311 leaves them in fifth place after round one of the West Coast Conference Golf Championship, played today at the 6,083-yard, par-72 Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
"Unfortunately the putts didn't drop for us today," said head coach Krystal Kelly. "We aren't changing our game plan much, but we will be more diligent to stay patient out there."
Tournament favorite and 12-time defending champion Pepperdine posted a 3-under 285 and leads second place Gonzaga (292) by seven shots. BYU is third at 299 with San Francisco fourth at 307.
Sophomore Meghan Shain and freshman Annie Freman each led the team shooting a 5-over 77 over the first 18 holes to tie for 14th place. Freman played her first nine at 1-over but her next seven holes included four bogeys, a double-bogey, par and a birdie to leave her at +6. She ended the round on a positive note with another birdie. Shain's round included 13 pars and five bogeys.
Gonzaga's Alice Kim shot a 3-under 69 to hold a one-shot lead over Pepperdine's Liv Cheng and BYU's Alex White. Pepperdine's Alina Ching is two shots back with three players tied for fifth at three shots off the lead.
Senior Taylor Camany ended the round with a 6-over 78, one shot better than Monique Riley, who carded a 79. Junior Kaci McCartan finished with an 82 (+10).
"We spent some time after the round working on the putting green," Kelly stated. "I'm confident we'll post a good score the next two rounds."
The Broncos will start Tuesday's second round from the first hole teeing off at 8:30 a.m. (PDT) playing with golfers from USF.
