SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With three tournament titles and top-10 finishes in nine of 11 events this season, Santa Clara's Annie Freman was selected the West Coast Conference women's golf Freshman of the Year becoming the first Bronco to capture the award. Freman was also named to the All-Conference Team while Taylor Camany and Monique Riley each earned Honorable Mention recognition in a vote of the league's head coaches.
"I'm so excited for Annie being named WCC Freshman of the Year, it was well deserved," said head coach Krystal Kelly. "Her game is getting better and better. I look forward to seeing what she can do in the future."
Freman played all 31 rounds in 11 events this season leading the team with a 74.19 stroke average and matched the program record of three titles in one season.
The first-year player from Las Vegas, Nev. (Faith Lutheran HS) captured her first win at Santa Clara's own Colby Invitational beating teammate Sadie Strain on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff on October 22, and won the Cal Poly Invitational the following week with a personal-best 69 in the final round. Those two events played 36 holes.
Winning her first 54-hole event, Freman finished at 1-under 215 at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on April 8 to tie with a pair of golfers for medalist honors. Freman was awarded the trophy on a scorecard playoff and tied Miki Ueoka's 2008-09 program record for wins in a season.
With strong play at the WCC Championship, Camany and Riley were named to the WCC's Honorable Mention Team.
Camany, a senior from Salinas, Calif. (Salinas HS) was acknowledged by the WCC for the third consecutive season. She was a first-team all-conference pick in 2012 and an honorable mention performer in 2013.
"Taylor finished her final round at the WCC Championship very strong going 3-under for her last seven holes," noted Kelly. "Great scoring in tough conditions; we are going to miss her."
Riley, a sophomore from Pleasanton, Calif. (Amador Valley HS), had her first career top-10 finish and led the team for the first time with her ninth place showing at the WCC Championship this week. Riley had a personal-best 73 in Tuesday's second round and carded her second-best 54-hole score with a 227. She earned honorable mention accolades for the second straight season.
