SAN JOSE, Calif. – Sophomore Sadie Strain shot a career-low round of 2-under-par 70 playing as an individual to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Colby Invitational played today at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose.
Playing in just her second tournament of the season and first since the season opening event, Strain carded five birdies on the day and leads Boise State's McKenzie Ford, who was the only other player under par at 1-under 71.
All nine Santa Clara players are competing in the event with the five team members combining to shoot 312 (+24) over the first round. Boise State shot a 303 (+15) to grab the first round lead, two strokes ahead of Cal State Northridge (305). The Broncos are nine shots off the lead but just one shot ahead of Northern Colorado and Grand Canyon, who both shot 313.
Sacramento State had to withdraw from the tournament after the team van was involved in a traffic altercation Sunday en route to the event. No one was seriously injured and several team members returned home. Two players, Rockelle Sande and Sagee Palavivatana, are competing as individuals.
As a team the Broncos were led junior Kaci McCartan, who fired a 2-over 74 to tie for 3rd place, and freshman Annie Freman, who is in 5th place after a 3-over 75.
Junior Casey Briggs, who has been sidelined with a wrist injury, played in her first tournament of the season and matched her second-lowest round with a 5-over 77 to tie for 11th place halfway through the tournament.
Monday's first round was delayed nearly 60 minutes waiting for a thick blanket of fog to lift. Tuesday's final round is scheduled to tee off with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. (PDT).
