SAN JOSE, Calif. – Paced by freshman Annie Freman, the Santa Clara women's golf team carded the second-best team score of the second round with a 292 and climbed into fifth place after the first day of play at the 13-team Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational, completed today at the Almaden Golf and Country Club.
The Broncos shot a 307 in the first round tying for 10th place, but scored the third-best round of their 2013-14 season with a 4-over 292 over the second 18 holes ending the day in fifth at 599, only 11 shots behind Oregon. UC Davis and San Francisco are tied for second at 590 with host San José State holding down the fourth spot at 596.
"Today's second round showed a lot about our program," said head coach Krystal Kelly. "We've come a long way and to shoot a 292 in these conditions was very impressive." It was a cool, overcast day with a light rain falling during the second round.
Freman had the top second round score with a 2-under 70, matching San Francisco's Claire Sorensen's first round 70 for the top score of the day. Coupled with her first round 73, Freman is tied for third at 1-under 143 heading into Tuesday's final round, just one shot behind co-leaders Sammi Stevens from New Mexico and Martina Edberg of CS Fullerton.
Kaci McCartan shot identical rounds of 74 and is tied for 13th at 148 (+4).
Taylor Camany and Monique Riley each shot a first round 80 and matched McCartan's second round of 74 to place in a tie for 40th at 154 (+10). Meghan Shain had rounds of 82 and 85 to finish at 167.
"The girls have been working very hard on their games and today it all came together," Kelly noted. "I couldn't be more proud of them. It was very exciting to watch."
The Broncos will be teamed with players from San Jose State and Coastal Carolina in Tuesday's final round that is scheduled to tee off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., weather permitting.
