FRESNO, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf shot a final-round 301, ending the Fresno State Classic in a third-place tie with the tournament host at 897.
The Broncos scored the third-lowest round of the tournament with a 2-over 290 in yesterday's second-round, moving them into the top-5. It was Santa Clara's best round of the season. However, the Broncos couldn't keep the momentum going and failed to threaten team champion Sacramento State, which posted an 865 total to win the event by 18 strokes over Indiana.
Senior Kristin Le was the top individual finisher for the Broncos, placing in a tie for ninth-place with a pair of golfers at 5-over 221. It was the fourth top-10 of the season and 23rd career for Le. She finished 10 shots behind co-champions Avery French of UC Irvine and Indiana's Erin Harper.
Freshman Sarah Busey was the low-Bronco on Tuesday with a 73. She went 1-over across the last two rounds and earned her second career top-20 finish by tying for 18th at 10-over 226.
Sophomore Chloe Wong was the third Bronco to place in the top-20 ending the tournament at 223 to finish in tie for 14th.
"Overall it was a great tournament for us," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "We had three players in the top-20, so I'm very happy with that."
It's a short turnaround for the Broncos, who are back in action Monday. "We leave for the BYU Entrada in St. George on Saturday," Kelly said. "The field in that event is probably the strongest we've seen this year."
First round play in the BYU Entrada will take place Mar. 12 at the Entrada Golf Course.
