Four Run First Propels Softball Past Weber State

BOISE, Idaho – A four run first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Geenamarie Bonilla, led Santa Clara softball past Weber State 7-4 on Saturday afternoon in Idaho.

Ellie Fisher led off the game with a single but the next two Santa Clara (4-11) batters went down. After a walk to Morgan Modesto, Amanda Delfino brought in the first run with a single to right and Bonilla followed with a three-run home run to center to make it 4-0.

Bonilla finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the offense. Kelsie Barnard was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Delfino scored two runs and added an RBI.

After putting up a run in the bottom of the first, Weber State (7-10-1) came back with two more in the second to cut the deficit to 4-3. Rae Gall led off the inning with a double and came in to score on a one-out double by Brinkerhoff. Sydney White followed with another double to bring in the second run of the inning.

Gall collected three hits and scored a run to lead the Wildcats offense. McKinle Brinkerhoff knocked in two and scored a run while Takesha Saltern was 2-for-4 with a run scored and White picked up two hits with an RBI.

Micaela Vierra (2-4) got the win in 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. She allowed an unearned run on four hits with a walk. Ciara Gonzalez went 3 scoreless innings for her first save of the season.

The Broncos would add three more runs in the top of the third with two out. After the first run came in on an error, Barnard knocked a two-run single to center to put Santa Clara up 7-3.

Jordan Lockhart (0-1) went the distance for Weber State and picked up the loss. She allowed seven runs, four earned, on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Broncos finish the SpringHill Suites Classic tomorrow vs. CSUN at 8 a.m. and at Boise State at noon.
