Women's Water Polo Opens 2003 Season with a Win

Jan. 25, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team opened the 2003 season with a 19-2 victory over Sonoma State, a collegiate club team, this morning at the Leavey Pool.

The Seawolves will stay in the pool and take on Division III fourth-ranked UC Santa Cruz at noon. The Broncos will return to action this afternoon at 2 p.m. to take on the Slugs.

The Broncos opened up a 2-0 lead in the first minute of action against Sonoma State, with senior Elizabeth Glotzbach making the first score. Sophomore Katy Shumm stole the ball on the Seawolves' next possession and scored on the fast break. Shumm recorded another steal on the next trip down the pool and assisted on freshman Alanna Simpkins' goal. Senior Kelley Mays scored twice in the first period, while junior teammate Becky Hong scored her first goal of the season. Simpkins scored again to give Santa Clara a 7-1 lead after the first quarter.

The Seawolves' only goal of the half cam from Faix with a shot off the crossbar to make it a 3-1 game midway through the first quarter.

The scoring slowed down for SCU in the second half, with Hong and Amanda Ginn adding two goals apiece and Allison Stover and Kathleen Hamm adding one each. Sonoma State's Lembke scored in the third quarter to make it a 16-2 game.

"We didn't want to score on the counter-attack for the entire game, so we started setting up our offense more in the second half and worked on our half-court game," head coach Keith Wilbur said.

Junior Alexandra Dalmau made her SCU debut in goal, blocking two power-play attempts in the first half en route to three saves. Junior Anne Ginotti guarded the net in the second half, registering two saves.

After today's matches, the Broncos will continuing the season next Saturday, Feb. 1, hosting UC Davis. The match will begin at 3 p.m. at Leavey Pool.
