Women's Water Polo Wins Twice at Hayward Shootout

HAYWARD, Calif. - Santa Clara University women's water polo team member Kathleen Hamm scored nine goals to lead the Broncos to two victories at the CS Hayward Pioneer Shootout. SCU defeated Claremont 10-2 and host CS Hayward 11-3 to finish the tournament tied for first with a 3-1 weekend mark. Overall, the Broncos improve to 10-8 on the season.

"Our game against Claremont was our best all season," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "They are a good team, but everything was working for us."

Hamm scored four goals against Claremont, while Katie Shumm added two. Becky Hong, Bryn Asher, Kelley Mays and Alanna Simpkins added one tally apiece.

Santa Clara held a 4-2 lead at halftime and then shutout Claremont in the final two periods. Anne Ginotti and Alexandra Dalmau split time in the cage for Santa Clara, and combined for seven saves.

Santa Clara faced the host Pioneers in the final game of the tournament and opened an 8-0 halftime advantage en route to the victory. Hamm scored five times while Elizabeth Glotzbach scored two goals. Simpkins, Shumm, Mays and Asher added one goal each.

"It was a great weekend for us. Although we started slow against Michigan State, we improved in each of the following games," Wilbur added."

Santa Clara returns to the pool after finals, participating the Claremont Tournament on March 22 and 23.
