Water Polo Falls Twice at Claremont Tournament

March 22, 2003

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Becky Hong scored four goals for the Santa Clara University women's water polo team, but the Broncos fell 9-8 to Harvard to open the Claremont tournament this morning. Santa Clara fell to No. 20 Arizona State in its second game of the day and evens its overall record to 10-10.

"It was a tough game and we came out pretty strong," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "We were up in the first half, and played hard the whole time, but allowed a goal with 12 seconds left to give Harvard the win.

Katy Shumm, Alanna Simpkins, Kelley Mays and Amanda Ginn scored one goal each for the Broncos, while Anne Ginotti led the defense with five saves in the cage.

Against the Sun Devils, Shumm scored SCU's only goal in the first quarter.

"We played better than the score indicated," Wilbur added. "Our defense was there; we just couldn't shoot the ball."

Santa Clara remains at the Claremont Tournament and will play two games on Sunday: McAlaster at 8 a.m. and host Claremont at 1 p.m. Claremont is ranked third in the Division III standings.
