Water Polo Closes Slugfest with Close OT Loss

Feb. 16, 2003

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Santa Clara University sophomore Katy Shumm scored with 30 seconds left in regulation to tie CS Bakersfield in women's water polo action at the Slugfest Invitational, hosted by UC Santa Cruz. She finished with four goals in the 11-8 double-overtime loss to the 20th-ranked Roadrunners. As the Broncos' record moves to 4-3 on the season.

Santa Clara closed round robin play earlier in the day with a 12-8 victory over UC Davis' club team, who is ranked third nationally.

Senior Kelly Mays added two goals, while senior Becky Hong and sophomore Amanda Ginn added one tally apiece against CS Bakersfield. Freshman Alexandra Dalmau blocked a four-meter penalty shot during first-half action. She and junior Anne Ginotti split time guarding the net, and each finished with four saves.

Against the Aggies, Mays and fellow senior Elizabeth Glotzbach, along with Shumm, scored three goals apiece to lead the Broncos. One tally each was scored by Hong and freshmen Alanna Simpkins and Kathleen Hamm to round out the scoring.

"We had a little more going on in our offense than we did yesterday," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "Everybody played well. I'm really happy with our effort."

Santa Clara will return to the pool on Friday, taking on 15th-ranked UC Davis at 4 p.m. The Broncos will remain in Davis and participate in the UC Davis Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Opponents and times have yet to be announced.
