March 2, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team defeated Villanova by a score of 13-8 Sunday morning at the Leavey Pool. The win moved the Broncos' record to 6-7 while dropping the Wildcats to 0-7 on the year.

Santa Clara jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, scoring the game's first four goals before allowing Villanova on the board with 23 seconds remaining in the first stanza. The Broncos continued to pressure the Wildcats in the second quarter and extended their lead to 7-3 by halftime.

The first half scoring was very balanced in the first half for Santa Clara, with five players notching at least one goal. The second half was vastly different as Becky Hong scored four of the team's six goals in the half, giving her six goals for the game and leading the Broncos to the 13-8 win.

Monica Pommier scored twice in the second half and was joined by Kim Pare, who scored a goal in each half, as the Wildcat's leading scorers in the match.

Villanova will return to the Leavey Pool for a 1 p.m. match against Cal State Hayward. The Broncos will also take on Cal State Hayward Sunday afternoon. That match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
