Water Polo Falls at Davis Shootout

Feb. 22, 2003

DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team lost both games today at the Davis Shootout, hosted by UC Davis at Hickey Pool. The Broncos fell to Hartwick 11-3 and CS Bakersfield 6-5 in overtime to move their season record to 4-6.

Hartwick is tied for third in the CWPA national rankings, while CS Bakersfield is ranked 19th.

Against Hartwick, senior Becky Hong led the Broncos with two goals, scoring in the second and third quarter. Fellow senior Kelley Mays added the final tally. Alexandra Dalmau and Anne Ginotti shared net time and combined for seven saves.

A 6-1 halftime deficit was too much to overcome for the Broncos, who were also outscored 4-0 in the final period.

"We broke down on the counter-attack and it costs us the game," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said.

Santa Clara lost to CS Bakersfield in overtime for the second time in as many weeks, this time by a 6-5 score. Freshman Alanna Simpkins scored twice to lead the Broncos, while Hong, Mays and senior Elizabeth Glotzbach posted one goal each.

Santa Clara held a 2-1 lead at halftime, and took a 5-4 lead into the final minute of regulation. The Roadrunners scored on a man-up goal with 35 seconds remaining to take it into overtime. Bakersfield scored on its first play in the second extra period.

Ginotti registered eight blocks, including three in overtime.

Santa Clara remains at the Davis Shootout with two games on Sunday.
