Water Polo Places Seventh at Davis Shootout

Feb. 23, 2003

DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team closed out the Davis Shootout with a 7-6 victory over UC Santa Cruz, good for seventh place in the tournament. The Broncos defeated the sixth-ranked Slugs, but started the morning with an overtime loss to Pacific, 9-8. Overall, Santa Clara is 5-7 on the season. The Shootout was hosted by UC Davis at Hickey Pool.

"We were down 4-1 after the first quarter against Pacific, so I think we did a good job battling back. It's just too bad we couldn't get the win," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "Against UCSC, it was a tough match. It was our fifth game in three days and you could see everybody was tired. I'm proud of the way they grinded it out to earn the victory."

Senior Becky Hong led all scorers with three against the Tigers. Kelley Mays added two, while Elizabeth Glotzbach, Amanda Ginn and Alanna Simpkins added one tally each.

Alexandra Dalmau had four saves in goal for the Broncos.

Against the Slugs, Mays posted three goals, and one each was scored by Ginn, Simpkins, Hong and Katy Shumm. It was Ginn's goal with 1:51 remaining in the final quarter that gave Santa Clara the win.

Santa Clara returns home and hosts two games at the Leavey Pool on Sunday. The Broncos will host Villanova at 10 a.m. and CS Hayward at 4 p.m.
