Water Polo Splits Matches at Slugfest

Feb. 15, 2003

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team split its games today at the Slugfest Invitational. The Broncos topped CS Hayward 13-2, but fell to CS Northridge 6-3. The Broncos' record moves to 3-2 overall.

Senior Kelley Mays and freshman Kathleen Hamm scored three goals apiece to lead the Broncos. Senior Becky Hong and Elizabeth Glotzbach added two goals apiece, while sophomore Katy Shumm and freshmen Bryn Asher and Alanna Simpkins each posted one tally.

Netminders Anne Ginotti and Alexandra Dalmau split time in the cage, combining for seven blocks.

"This was our first game in a regulation pool and we adjusted well and played a good game," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said.

In the second contest, the Broncos fell to CS Northridge 6-3 in a defensive battle. Glotzbach, Simpkins and sophomore Amanda Ginn each scored on goal for the Broncos.

Wilbur highlighted Simpkins' game, as she also drew three kick-outs in the contest.

"This was good competition for us," Wilbur added, "and this is a team we can beat when we see them later in the season. We had an off third quarter and they jumped on us. I'm not disappointed in how we competed."

Santa Clara will remain at the Tournament and take on UC Davis' Club team on Sunday at 9 a.m. to close out round-robin play. The Broncos will play an afternoon match based on seedings. All matches are played at the East Fieldhouse Pool on the campus of UC Santa Cruz.
