Women's Water Polo Wins Third Straight

March 27, 2003

LOS ANGELES - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team won its third straight match with a 9-7 victory over Occidental this afternoon. Santa Clara improves to 14-12 on the season with the win.

"We were down 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter," head coach Keith Wilbur explained. "They had a big crowd too, but our girls stepped up and earned the win. It's a good victory to have in our pocket; we need to win those close ones to know we can do it."

Kelley Mays led the Broncos with three goals, while Becky Hong and Katy Shumm added two apiece. Kathleen Hamm and Alanna Simpkins tallied on score each for the final number. Anne Ginotti recorded six blocks in goal.

Santa Clara is in the midst a very busy spring break, with seven road matches in a five-day stretch. The Broncos will close the week with participation in the LMU Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Santa Clara opens the tournament against CS Northridge at 2:15 p.m.
