TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Kelley Mays scored three goals to lead the Santa Clara University women's water polo team to a 7-5 upset victory over No. 20 CS Northridge this evening to open participation at the Sun Devil Invite, hosted by Arizona State University at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

"This is our best win so far this season," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "I'm very happy. It's a great way to start the weekend."

CS Northridge had won the first two contests against the Broncos this season, a 6-3 win in the fifth game of the year and a 6-4 overtime battle to end spring break in March. It also marks the first win over a Division I ranked opponent for the Broncos.

"This win shows that we've made improvement through the year," Wilbur added.

The Broncos' record is now 15-17 on the season, while the Matadors fall to 22-8.

CS Northridge took the early lead, but Mays evened the match with a power-play score. With just 25 seconds remaining in the period, Becky Hong scored to give the Broncos the advantage.

The Matadors tied the match with a goal from Erica Bonetti early in the second frame, but Elizabeth Glotzbach tallied a goal and Mays converted a four-meter penalty shot. Mays gave SCU a 5-2 lead with another score just 11 seconds before halftime.

Each team scored twice in the third frame, with both Bronco goals by sophomore Katy Shumm.

Junior goalkeeper Anne Ginotti led the Broncos defensively with eight blocks and two saves.

Kendra Klein had two goals in the loss for the Matadors.

Santa Clara will look for its second upset in as many days, as it will take on the host Sun Devils on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Arizona State is ranked 19th nationally. The Broncos will close out the Invitational later that afternoon against Cal Baptist at 3 p.m.
