BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team closed its season with an 11-8 victory over CS San Bernardino this afternoon, and placed fifth at the 2003 Western Women's Water Polo Association Championships. The event was hosted this weekend by CS Bakersfield at the Hillman Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Katy Shumm led the Broncos with three goals, while two each were scored by the team's trio of seniors: Kelley Mays, Elizabeth Glotzbach and Becky Hong. Alanna Simpkins and Amanda Ginn added one tally each.

The Bronco defense was led by Anne Ginotti, who registered six saves. Four of the Coyotes' eight goals were on penalty shots, with two more on rebounds.

"Anne played a great game and prevented them from scoring in the flow of the game," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "It was also our best game of the season on counter attacks and converting our six-on-five opportunities. I'm proud of the way our team bounced back from Friday's loss and closed the season with three good victories."

Santa Clara, seeded fifth in this weekend's tournament, closes the season with an 18-20 record, while Coyotes fall to 21-15.

Mays finished the weekend with a team-high eight goals.

Loyola Marymount defeated UC San Diego for the Championship, while UC Davis placed third and CS Bakersfield fourth.
