Women's Water Polo Falls in Overtime

March 28, 2003

LOS ANGELES - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team dropped an overtime match to CS Northridge by a 6-4 score this afternoon to open up play at the Loyola Marymount Invitational. Santa Clara's overall record moves to 14-13 on the season, while the Matadors improve to 16-3.

"We were drawing a lot of kick-outs, but we couldn't convert our man-up opportunities," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "They have a very good goalkeeper, but we weren't taking full advantage of the game."

The Broncos did force overtime with two unanswered goals in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Katy Shumm led the Broncos with two goals, while one score each was tallied by senior Kelley Mays and freshman Alanna Simpkins. Anne Ginotti recorded 11 blocks in goal.

Santa Clara will close its spring break trip with two more matches on Saturday, concluding a seven-match string in the last five days. The Broncos will play Redlands at 10:15 a.m. and host Loyola Marymount at 3:30 p.m. Redlands is the top-ranked Division III team in the country this week, while the Lions rank seventh in the Division I poll.
