Santa Clara Athletics Bestows Student-Athlete Awards

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - With the academic year coming to a close, Santa Clara Athletics recognized its student-athletes with an awards ceremony on Thursday evening.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines, teams were addressed individually by director of athletics Renee Baumgartner at the Schott Athletic Excellence Center before awards were bestowed and the student-athletes received their letter awards.

Jack Davidson of men's cross country/track and field and Matt McCarty of men's golf shared the Pat Malley Award as the Bronco male student-athlete of the year.

Davidson became the first men's runner in program history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championship, where he took 65th place. On the track, he reached the postseason for the second time in two seasons, setting program records at 1,500 meters and 5,000 along the way.

McCarty, a fifth-year senior, made two trips in the NCAAs including this season's appearance in the regional in Washington where he missed reaching the national championship final by only three strokes. He earned All-West Coast Conference first team honors this season for the third time in his career.

The Brandi Chastain Award for top female student-athlete was shared by Alex Loera and Kelsey Turnbow of women's soccer who helped lead the team to its second national championship in school history last month.

Loera became just the fourth Bronco to win the Honda Award this year after being named the College Cup Defensive Most Outstanding Player. She was also second team All-American and WCC Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

Turnbow led the squad with 10 goals, including the match-tying strike in the national title game against top-seeded Florida State. She was named the College Cup Offensive Most Outstanding Player for her performance. Turnbow also took home Top Drawer Soccer Player of the Year honors and was a third team All-American. She was named first team All-WCC for the fourth year in a row.

2020-21 Santa Clara Athletics Student-Athlete Awards

Jim Jennings Award
• Eric Riley (baseball)

Senior non student-athlete for his or her service to the athletics department. The award is in honor of Jim Jennings who served as a volunteer in Santa Clara Athletics for more than 20 years.

Henry Schmidt Award
• Juan O'Neill (men's soccer)

Given annually to a male student-athlete who best demonstrates the qualities or attitude, character, desire, competitive spirit and the will to excel both on and off the field of play. Henry Schmidt was the first Santa Clara's athletic trainer, a position he held for 50 years.

Marygrace Colby Award
• Julie Doyle (women's soccer)

Given annually to a female senior athlete who best demonstrate the qualities or attitude, character, desire, competitive spirit and the will to excel both on and off the field of play. Mary Grace Colby was the first Women's Athletic Director.

DJ Frandsen Award
• Marlee Nicolos (women's soccer)

A male or female student-athlete who used courage, perseverance and spirit to overcome adversity and now serves as a role model for inspiration. The award is in honor of former men's basketball manager David Frandsen Jr. who inspired many with his battle with cancer which ultimately claimed his life.

Jim Shea Award
• Liyah Lopez (softball)

In years past, this award was bestowed to the most courageous football player. It now recognizes one male or female student-athlete who has courageously led his or her team through selfless actions and been a leader in the campus community. Jim Shea was the first Santa Clara student-athlete whose life was cut short while serving in the Vietnam War.

Carroll Williams Award
• Sofia Jones (women's soccer)

A senior who bests defines what it means to be a Santa Clara student-athlete. Someone who excels in the classroom and athletically while making an outstanding contribution in community service.

Brandi Chastain Award
• Alex Loera (women's soccer)
• Kelsey Turnbow (women's soccer)

Given annually to the school's top senior female student-athlete. Brandi Chastain was Bronco legend on the soccer field and was on the United States Women's National Team from 1988-2004.

Pat Malley Award
• Matt McCarty (men's golf)
• Jack Davidson (men's cross country/track and field)

Given to the top senior male athlete. The award is in honor of former football coach and director of athletics Pat Malley.

One Shining Moment Award
• Women's soccer National Championship
