Baseball Renews Bay Area Rivalry with Stanford Tuesday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball returns to Stephen Schott Stadium after a six-game road trip to host Bay Area rival Stanford Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The Broncos and Cardinal will meet for the 364th time in a series that dates back 124 years.

The Broncos are coming off a 6-0 road victory against West Coast Conference-leading Gonzaga on Sunday. Santa Clara holds a 4-1 record in 2016 midweek games and has outscored its opposition 38-17 in the four victories. Stanford has lost six of its last seven contests and four in a row.

The Broncos swept the season series against the Cardinal for the first time since 1974 and won multiple games against Stanford for the first time since 2007.

Parking

Baseball parking has changed for the 2016 season. Parking is now available in the Guadalupe lot, adjacent to 455 El Camino Real. The Guadalupe lot is reserved beginning 60 minutes before game time through the end of the event for free parking. Baseball parking is no longer allowed in the lot behind Schott Stadium's left field wall. Overflow parking is available in the Leavey Center lot. Spectators that plan to arrive more than an hour prior to game time on weekdays are encouraged to purchase a parking permit for the Leavey lot. Leavey lot parking is free on weekends. ADA parking is available in the lot directly in front of the main gates; there is no general public parking in this lot. Follow signs for parking instructions.

Last Weekend

Friday, April 22 — GU 7 SCU 4The Bulldogs scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and take the lead for good. The Broncos produced a steady stream of offense throughout the contest, putting 12 runners on base with less than two outs.

Saturday, April 23 — GU 3 SCU 0Steven Wilson pitched 7.1 innings to match his longest outing of the season and the Broncos outhit the Bulldogs 9-6. Gonzaga scored twice in the third and once in the sixth.

Sunday, April 24 — SCU 6 GU 0Santa Clara scored four runs in the first three innings Sunday and Jason Seever struck out a career-high nine batters in a 6-0 shutout win.

Broncos in the Field

TC Florentine leads the Broncos with a .306 batting average and Kyle Cortopassi is hitting .287. Cortopassi has reached base safely in nine straight games and Tyler Meditz is riding a five-game hitting streak.

Austin Fisher led Santa Clara by going 5-for-11 (.455) with an RBI and a run scored last weekend at Gonzaga. Jake Brodt added four hits and Braden Frankfort belted a pair of doubles. Ryan Budnick hit his first home run of the season Sunday, which was the game's decisive hit in a 6-0 Santa Clara win. The Broncos outhit the Bulldogs twice in the series; Gonzaga had only been outhit eight times in 34 games entering the weekend.

Defensively, the Broncos committed no errors and turned six double plays between Saturday and Sunday.

Broncos on the Mound

Travis Howard makes his 16th appearance and fifth start of the season Tuesday night. The righthander had a tough outing against Gonzaga on Friday — he allowed four earned runs on six hits in 2.0 innings. In his last start, the Tucson, Ariz. native allowed four earned runs in 3.0 innings of Santa Clara's 13-7 victory over New Mexico on April 12.

Max Kuhns is tied for second in single-season program history with 11 saves. Anthony Rea set the Bronco record with 13 saves in 2004.

Stanford

The Cardinal was swept last weekend at home against Arizona State. Stanford has lost six of seven contests after winning six of its prior seven games. Pitching and defense have been central to the team's success this season — the Cardinal rank first in the nation with a .987 fielding percentage and 12th with a 2.92 ERA. They have committed 16 errors on the season and are the only team in the country to have committed less than 20 errors.

Alex Dunlap leads the team with a .337 batting average and Quinn Brodey has driven in a team-high 26 runs on the year. John Hochstatter makes his sixth appearance and fourth start of the season Tuesday night.
