Baseball Drops Season Finale 10-5 at BYU

PROVO, Utah — Santa Clara baseball took an early three-run lead in Saturday night's season finale against BYU and fell to the Cougars 10-5 at Miller Park. The Broncos close out 2016 at 23-29 overall and 10-17 in West Coast Conference play. 

Kert Woods helped the Broncos open the scoring for the third time in the series with an RBI single in the second inning. Stevie Berman and TC Florentine added back-to-back RBIs to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. After BYU took a 7-3 edge in the third, the Broncos cut the lead down to three runs in both the fourth and the sixth on RBI singles by Florentine. 

The Cougars (37-15, 19-8 WCC) produced three extra-base hits and plated seven runs between the second and third innings. Brennon Anderson hit a three-run homer to put BYU on the board and tie the contest at 3-3 in the second.

One inning later, Eric Urry sparked a two-out rally with an RBI single that gave the hosts a 4-3 lead. Keaton Kringlen followed with a two-run double and Anderson added an RBI double that made the score 7-3. Urry led all batters with three hits and Anderson drove in a game-high four runs.

Bronco starter Jason Seever (L, 6-3) allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout in 3.0 innings. Jacob Steffens struck out three batters in 4.0 relief frames. Cougar reliever Keaton Cenatiempo (W, 3-1) tossed the last 5.0 innings and held the Broncos to one run.

BYU earned a share of the WCC regular season championship alongside Gonzaga with the victory. Saint Mary's can also earn a share of the conference crown with a win over Portland on Sunday. 

All three Bronco seniors that started hit safely in their final games with the team. Florentine went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Ryan Budnick doubled, walked twice and scored a run and Kyle Cortopassi singled and scored a run. Senior Nick Medeiros dealt a scoreless eighth and struck out one batter in his final collegiate appearance.

GAME NOTES: First pitch was at 6:02 p.m. … time of the game was 2:50 … attendance was 2,541 … Saturday's game was the only contest in the series that did not have a weather delay.
