Baseball Takes Midweek Winning Streak to Cal Poly on Tuesday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball will look to keep its four-game midweek winning streak alive when it heads to the Central Coast to face Cal Poly on Tuesday. The Broncos defeated the Mustangs 10-1 on Tuesday, April 5 at Schott Stadium.

Bronco baseball is 5-1 overall in midweek games this season. The team won its third straight game against Stanford with a 4-2 victory last Tuesday. Cal poly won six consecutive games in a nine-day span from April 16-24, and has lost four in a row, including a road sweep against Long Beach State last weekend.

Tuesday, April 26 — SCU 4 STAN 2Travis Howard and Jake Steffens combined to allowed just two runs in 7.0 innings, and Austin Fisher hit the first home run of his career as the Broncos defeated the Cardinal at Schott Stadium.

Friday, April 29 — SCU 9 LMU 1: The Broncos jumped on the Lions with a four-run second inning and Steven Wilson tossed 7.0 shutout frames. Tyler Meditz homered twice and John Cresto added a pair of triples in Santa Clara's biggest Friday night win of the season.

Saturday, April 30 — LMU 11 SCU 8: Santa Clara fell behind by nine runs twice in the first three innings Saturday night, and battled back to score seven of the last eight runs in an 11-8 loss.

Sunday, May 1 — LMU 5 SCU 0: The Broncos scattered six hits over six different innings and were bested by 8.0 shutout frames from LMU starter J.D. Busfield.

Broncos in the Field

Santa Clara had three players hit betters than .400 over the weekend against LMU: John Cresto (6-for-13, .462), Tyler Meditz (5-for-11, .455) and Braden Frankfort (5-for-12, .417). Meditz went 5-for-5 with a double, three home runs, two walks, five RBIs and six runs scored in his first seven trips to the plate against the Lions. Cresto tallied two triples on Friday night and a home run on Saturday while Frankfort doubled twice on Saturday.

Kyle Cortopassi is currently on a 13-game on-base streak. Grant Meylan holds the season-long on-base streak at 15 games. Cortopassi has started all six midweek games and tops the team with a .500 batting average (9-for-18), .640 on-base percentage and eight runs scored in those contests.

Broncos on the Mound

Travis Howard makes his 18th appearance and sixth start of the season Tuesday night. The righthander held Stanford to an earned run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout in 4.0 innings last Tuesday. Santa Clara is 5-1 when Howard starts this season.

Max Kuhns ranks second in single-season program history with 12 saves. Anthony Rea set the Bronco record with 13 saves in 2004.

Cal Poly

Brett Barbier, Kyle Marincoz and Michael Sanderson have started all 42 games for the Mustangs this season. Barbier tops the team with a .369 batting average, .495 on-base percentage (25 walks, 14 hit by pitches) and 31 runs scored. John Schuknecht leads the team with 18 extra-base hits and 35 RBIs.

Bobby Ay makes the fifth appearance and second start of his freshman campaign Tuesday night. He allowed an earned run on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of a 5-4 loss at Cal last Tuesday. Ay will take the Hill for the second time in Cal Poly's last 28 games.
