Men’s Basketball Cruises Past Notre Dame de Namur, 86-44, in Exhibition Game

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Junior guard Jared Brownridge scored a game-high 14 points and freshman guard Matt Hauser added 11 to help propel the Santa Clara men's basketball team to a comfortable 86-44 victory against Notre Dame de Namur in Friday's exhibition game.

Junior forward Nate Kratch had 10 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and chipped in five rebounds in only 15 minutes of action. Freshman forward Henrik Jadersten nearly posted a double-double, tallying 10 points, on 4 of 6 shooting, and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Broncos, who shot 55.6 percent from the field, broke their lone exhibition game open with a 21-3 run beginning late in the first half.

Jadersten started the flurry with a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left in the opening period to increase the lead to 34-20 then Brownridge scored the next nine points.

Last year's first-team All-West Conference selection nailed a jumper with 2 seconds left in the first half and then hit his first three field goal attempts of the second to increase the lead to 43-23 with 17:28 remaining in the game.

The Argonauts didn't get on the board in the second half until Brian Ying hit a layup at 12:34 to cut the deficit to 52-25, but never closed the gap.

"We got a chance to play everyone," head coach Kerry Keating said. "There were so many practices missed by guys. Our chemistry is obviously off. It's going to be a work in progress, but I thought some guys gave us pretty good effort tonight."

The Broncos shot a blistering 60.6 percent from the floor in the second half, but were just 6-for-15 from the free-throw line in the game. Santa Clara held the Argonauts to 32.1 percent from the field, including 0-for-12 from the 3-point line.

"I wished we could have gotten to the free throw line a little more," Keating said. "I don't think we took advantage of that in the first half and got a little 3-point crazy. I know we can shoot. We did get inside a little more in the second half."

All 13 players who saw action for Santa Clara entered the scoring column, including five in double figures. Matt Hubbard had 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field.

The playing time was spread around as 11 players saw double-digit minutes, but only Hauser (26) and Brownridge (25) played more than 20.

Brownridge, Jadersten, KJ Feagin, Jarvis Pugh and Evan Wardlow missed a various amount of preseason practice time due to injury. In addition, Tony Lewis has missed the entire preseason with a lower leg injury.

Brian Ying (11 points) and Jalen Young (10 points) led the way for Notre Dame de Namur, which plays in the Division II Pac West Conference.

The Argonauts held their only lead at 6-5 with 15:52 left in the first half, but the Broncos went on a 9-2 run and Notre Dame de Namur never got closer than five the rest of the first half.

Santa Clara has a week to prepare for the 49th Annual Cable Car Classic. The Broncos will entertain Lipscomb, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Denver in the three-day tournament, which begins Friday. SCU faces Lipscomb at 8 p.m.
