Santa Clara Renews Men's Rowing Rivalry with Sacramento State Sunday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara men's rowing heads to Lake Natoma in Folsom, Calif. Sunday for a dual with Sacramento State. The dual includes six races and will gave Santa Clara oarsmen the opportunity for a high volume of work as the team competes for the second time in three weeks.

The crews also race for the Bob Whitford Cup, named after the former coach of Santa Clara, Sacramento State and several other prestigious collegiate rowing programs.

"We are really looking forward to the Sacramento State duel this Sunday," head coach Jay Farwell said. "There is a great tradition of competition between the two crews that really came to a head in the late '90s through the '00s."

"This is a great opportunity for us to get on the course at Lake Natoma which is the site of for the WIRA Championship at the end of April and the Western Sprints in the middle of May," Farwell said. The more time we can get on the course the better — it allows us to get comfortable with this race course — especially considering the fact that we are such a young team."

The Broncos last competed on Sunday, March 1 against UC Davis and Sonoma State at the Davis Invite. Santa Clara won four of its five races at the Port of Sacramento to begin the spring season.

"Coming off of last weekend's racing, we have been working really hard and there will be no tapering for this weekend's race with Sacramento State," Farwell said. "The volume and intensity of the work we are doing on and off the water is very high right now and we are going to get a number of the guys multiple races this weekend."

We expect to build off of last week's performance and the guys will be ready for it."
