Men’s Rowing Wins Two of Three Races Against UCSB, UCLA

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Men's rowing competed for the third time in as many weeks in its busy March schedule and won two of three races against UCSB and UCLA at Cachuma Lake Saturday. Santa Clara's Varsity 8 and Novice 8 boats outraced a pair of Gaucho Boats and one Bruin boat in each of their competitions.

"We had a very good weekend of racing at Cachuma Lake. UCSB is one of, if not, the fastest crews outside of the Pac-12 schools in the west," head coach Jay Farwell said. "They are very well coached (Des Stahl SCU '91) and we knew our guys would need a very solid race to compete with UCSB and UCLA."

Race Results (Click Here for Full Results)

Varsity 8 - 1st Place - 5:47.8

Coach Farwell: "The Varsity 8 did a phenomenal job in not letting the moment overwhelm them. There are five freshmen in that boat and I can't say enough about how they continue to impress us with their composure and execution on the race course."

JV 8 - 2nd Place - 6:13.5

Coach Farwell: "The JV8 also had a good race.  Although they fell short against UCSB, they did overtake UCLA and the guys in this boat feel like the boat is finally starting to come together."

Novice 8 - 1st Place - 6:05.8

Coach Farwell: "The novice 8 had a great race as well. Our freshman class is really providing some great effort on the race course. We are asking a lot of them and they continue to respond to the challenge. They put together a very fast time despite some difficulty in managing the line of the race course."
