Santa Clara Moves Up During Final Round Play in Cabo

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mex. – Cory Mehl finished with three birdies in the final six holes to post a top 20 finish at the Santa Clara Cabo Collegiate, a three-day event which concluded Monday at the Querencia Los Cabos golf club in Baja – one of Mexico's top courses.

Santa Clara was able to move up two spots on the final day and place 9th overall in the 12-team field. Mehl posted consecutive even-par rounds of 72 in rounds two and three, Sunday and Monday and sophomore teammate Scott Lamb fired a final round 71.

The University of Arkansas ran away with the team title – 22 shots better than the University of Houston who finished second. The Razorbacks had three players inside the top 10, including individual medalist Jamie Marshall, who won the event with a final-round 68 to go 5-under for the tournament.

"We played better today compared to the other two rounds," said Santa Clara head coach Rob Miller on Monday. "We were able to pass some teams in the standings. Our guys were hitting the ball really well today. From the tee to the green all the guys were doing a fantastic job but we had a hard time putting. Our putters just weren't there today. The stellar round for us was there today but we just couldn't put it all together with the putters."

"All of the feedback I've gotten has been great from the owners to the coaches," added Miller about Santa Clara serving as co-host for the event, which is in its inaugural season. "We've already begun planning for next year in the hopes of making this an annual thing. Arkansas won the tournament so, of course, they want to come back as co-hosts again. Our goal is to turn this into one of the premiere events in college golf."
