Men’s Golf Shoots Final Round 296 At John A. Burns Intercollegiate

LIHUE, Hawaii – The Santa Clara men's golf team carded its best score of the three-day John A. Burns Intercollegiate with Friday's final round 296 to finish in a 14th place tie at the prestigious event completed today at the 6,991-yard, par-72 Wailua Golf Course.

The Broncos improved their team score in every round but found it difficult to overcome their slow start in a stacked field that included four teams ranked in the top 27 as well as several other high-caliber West Coast programs.

A first round 308 left the Broncos in 15th place and despite improving their team score by five shots to a second round 303 and another seven strokes Friday, they were unable to advance up the leaderboard.

No. 23 Cal captured its fifth consecutive Burns title with an 852 total after a final round 279. Runner-up No. 31 New Mexico finished seven strokes back at 859 while No. 24 UNLV was third at 868.

Freshman Hayden Shieh shot a final round 2-under 70 scoring five birdies in the final round to climb 25 spots up the leaderboard and finished tied for 37th at 8-over 224.

Sophomore Tyler Kertson was the Broncos top individual finisher completing the tournament tied for 27th at 6-over 222 (71-77-74). His first round 1-under 71 included the team's only eagle when he mastered the 535-yard ninth hole.

Juniors Carlos Briones and Gio Gandionco both shot a final round 76 today. Briones tied for 56th at 228 (75-77-76) while Gandionco tied for 80th with his 235 (83-76-76). Drew Miller shot a 79 to finish the tournament at 240 and 88th place.

Cal's Shotaro Ban shot a final round 69 and claimed individual medalist honors with an 8-under 208 total, two shots better than UNLV's John Oda.

The Broncos get right back into tournament action when they travel to Tucson to compete in the University of Arizona hosted National Invitational Tournament starting Feb. 28.
