SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University men's soccer team showcased 22 different players during its lone exhibition match Saturday night against visiting Cal Poly. The Broncos are preparing for their official 2012 debut next Friday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. against Cal.

Playing the first-ever preseason exhibition in his 11-years as Santa Clara's head coach, Cameron Rast took advantage of the opportunity to try out various lineups and young players. "For us, we have some new guys that we are looking to see where they might fit in. We also have some very experienced guys that we are trying to get healthy … we used today's game as a real good test to see where guys are, trying a bunch of different combinations of players to see who might be able to add something we haven't had before."

SCU co-captain Mark Daus put the Broncos on the scoreboard in the second half, when he knocked in a rebounded corner kick with 35 minutes left to play. However, Cal Poly found the net three times in the opening 47 minutes to build up a comfortable advantage they held throughout the majority of the night.

The Mustangs – who tied USF 1-1 in an exhibition match at home last week - received goals from Chris Gaschen, George Malki and Matt MaGrassa to post the 3-1 decision over SCU Saturday.

The Broncos did not use returning starters Glenn Vass, Murphy Campbell or Gabriel Romero until the second half and went without All-West Coast Conference forward Erik Hurtado.

"I think we got a lot out of the contest," added Rast. "I don't think we were very sharp in certain moments. I thought Cal Poly did an awesome job. Paul (Holocher) did a great job with his team. They've already played one preseason match, so they already have this part under their belts and if we had played another preseason match we'd be a different team too."

SCU NOTES: Santa Clara had six players recognized on the College Sports Madness All-West Coast Conference Preseason Teams, including newcomer Jared Hegardt, who was projected as the league's freshman of the year.
