SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Bay Area and West Coast Conference rivals, Santa Clara University and St. Mary's College played to a scoreless draw Halloween night at Buck Shaw Stadium. The homestanding Broncos of SCU had some quality chances, especially in the overtime sessions, but neither team was able to break through with a game-winner.
"In the first half, we weren't sharp," said Santa Clara head coach and former Olympian Cameron Rast. "We looked like we were afraid to lose the game and we weren't playing to win it. You can't have a mentality like that because you will be on your heels and we were on our heels. We didn't play well in the first half. We were fortunate, only in the sense that something could have went awry and we could have found ourselves chasing after the first half."
Santa Clara (9-6-1; 6-2-1 WCC) takes its first tie of the 2012 season. The Broncos entered the night three points behind San Diego in the league standings with four games remaining. SCU will play each of its last three remaining regular season games on the road, beginning with a date at San Francisco Friday night.
St. Mary's (9-3-4; 5-2-2 WCC) is one year removed from winning its first-ever WCC title. The Gaels were able to knock off the Broncos in overtime 1-0 back on October 3 in Moraga.
Senior goalkeeper Larry Jackson played well, posting his fifth shutout, moving his season record to 9-5-1. The Gaels had their best chance to score in the first overtime, when Austin Bravo got in-behind the SCU back line, but Jackson charged and denied Bravo of the decider.
"In the end, I think we turned up the heat and intensity, but unfortunately when you start from a low vantage point it's hard to get good enough to catch up," said Rast about his team's slow start. "We had are chances, but couldn't quite push it. I thought the second half was really good, in particular trying to push to win the game."
Santa Clara is now 38-6-6 all-time against St. Mary's. Most recently at Buck Shaw, the Broncos posted a 2-1 'Senior Day' victory over the Gaels last season.
