SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In a game tied 1-1 at halftime, San Jose State University erupted to score four second-half goals, stunning homestanding Santa Clara University 5-3 at Buck Shaw Stadium Sunday night.
Santa Clara (1-4-0) – a team that beat Duke on the road last week and played No. 3 Creighton close Friday night – jumped out to an early lead but it was San Jose State (1-2-0) coming from behind, powered by reserve Jonathan Salceda's two goals and two assists.
It marked the first time since the 1985 season that SJSU beat SCU at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Santa Clara was aggressive right after the first whistle, out-shooting SJSU 9-5 in the opening half. Just seven minutes in, Erik Hurtado dribbled down the right side before his cross in the box connected perfectly with junior teammate Carlos Montes, who tapped in the game's first goal.
Hurtado, a preseason All-America pick, would finish the night with two goals and the assist to Montes.
But the story was SJSU. Trailing and not getting many chances in the first half, the Spartans were still able to equalize, making-good on their only early opportunity when Jasper Pipe's throw-in from the right side bounced high and over the SCU defense to set up Dylan Murphy's second goal of the year.
Following the intermission, in the 67th-minute, benefiting from the fresh legs of Salceda off the bench, the Spartans took the lead when Salceda took the possession through a few SCU defenders and had a crack on net. He converted the one-on-one opportunity against SCU true freshman goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh. With 23 minutes left, the Broncos were down 2-1.
The game instantly changed 12 minutes later when McIntosh came out of the net to clear a ball up to midfield, only to have Salceda gather it and kick it over McIntosh's head for an unlikely goal which put SJSU up 3-1.
SCU had all kinds of chances and out-shot SJSU 21-10 on the night. The Broncos had just missed scoring in the first half when a golden opportunity in front of the net sailed wide off the head of Mark Daus. In the second half, Michael Gates' header from just a few yards out bounced high.
When SCU was trailing 2-1, in need of a goal to even things up, Hurtado blasted a shot from just outside the right edge of the box, only to have it swatted away by a diving Michael Schwinn.
Schwinn had eight saves on the night for SJSU and would watch his teammates pour on the offense in the later stages, going up 4-1 when Salceda's cross set up Steven Shachez. Despite a pair of impressive unassisted scores from Hurtado inside of the 10-minute mark, SCU would endure its third-straight loss.
Santa Clara will look to rebound next weekend in Palo Alto against Stanford. The match is part of the Bay Area Classic series, which is set to start at 7 p.m. Sunday night, September 16.
