SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Monday afternoon the Santa Clara men's tennis team hosted No. 74 Xavier University and won in sweeping fashion, 7-0. SCU worked its way through three tough doubles pairings before rolling over the Musketeers in singles play. With the win the Broncos improve to 7-2 on the season as they head into this coming weekend's Arizona road trip.
The Broncos started the day off just edging out Xavier in doubles play to earn the 1-0 advantage going into singles. At the number 2 doubles position Brian Brogan and Jay Wong narrowly escaped Xavier's Anthony Palmenter and Brian Starr 8-6, while Andrew Kells and Grant Fleming at the number 3 spot snuck passed Marc Pretorious and J.T. Torbeck 8-5.
"Xavier played some great doubles matches. They were big match ups for us and we were very happy to come out with the point heading into singles," said Bronco head coach Derek Mills. "We picked it up in singles and I am really happy with how our guys came to play today. It was a good feeling to get a win against the team that took our spot in the top 75 ranked teams."
After winning the doubles point, SCU never looked back and proceeded to dominate each singles match. Kyle Dandan started things off with a strong win over Chris Herrlinger in the closest match up of the day earning the point in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (8), at No. 1 singles. At No. 4 singles, Jay Wong swept J.T. Torbeck, 6-0, 6-0.
The Broncos are back in action this weekend on the road to Arizona. On Friday, Mar. 5, Santa Clara will play Arizona with first serve set for 11:00 a.m. On Saturday, Mar. 6 SCU will take on Nebraska, also scheduled to being at 11:00 a.m.
