Broncos Close Out Fall Season at Gael Classic

Nov. 4, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - This weekend the Santa Clara men's tennis team closes out its fall tournament season in Moraga, Calif. at the Saint Mary's Gael Classic. Having gained momentum from last weekend's outstanding performance at the Battle of the Bay Classic, the Broncos are looking to close out the fall season on a final winning note. The Classic begins on Friday, Nov. 6 and continues through Sunday, Nov. 8.

SCU started its fall season at the NCAA Regional Championships where the Broncos fell short of preseason expectations. A highlight of the tournament was sophomore Kyle Dandan making his way to the Round of 32 where he then fell to University of Washington's Derek Drabble, 6-3, 6-2.

Last weekend the team bounced back from the lack luster Regional performance to dominate the Battle of the Bay Classic in San Francisco. Sophomore transfer Andrew Kells stole the show as he plowed through the singles bracket to finally defeat Stanford's top freshman recruit, Dennis Lin, to win the tournament. The Broncos also saw life from freshmen Grant Fleming and Tom Pham as they battled some of the tournament's top players. Pham fell to Saint Mary's top seed Lucas Tirelli, while Fleming defeated Stanford's Walker Kehrer then fell to Cal's Sky Lovill.

The Broncos looks to continue their success this weekend as they take the courts on Friday. Updates and results will be posted throughout the weekend.
