Men's Tennis Closes Fall Season at Saint Mary's

Nov. 9, 2009

MORAGA, Calif. - This weekend at the Saint Mary's Gael Classic, the Santa Clara mens tennis team closed out the fall season on a winning note, as freshman Eugene Muchynski won his singles bracket and doubles pair of Muchynksi and Grant Fleming went to the doubles bracket finals. Jay Wong, Andrew Kells, and Kyle Dandan made it to their bracket's singles quarterfinals while Nick Buckley and Tom Pham worked their way to their doubles bracket semifinals.

In the Red division singles quarterfinals Wong, Dandan, and Kells each faced off against a Cal opponent, but just fell short of moving on to the semifinals. "We had a lot of our guys make it to the quarterfinals but come up just short," said Bronco head coach Derek Mills. "I'm happy about getting to the quarterfinal round, but we need to make that next step to get our guys to the next level."

In the White division singles bracket freshman Eugene Muchynski defeated fellow Bronco and first seeded Tom Pham (6-4, 6-3) before taking on third seeded Sherif Hamdy of Saint Mary's to win the bracket finals (6-2, 5-7, 1-0(10-5)).

"We are really happy with how well Eugene played this weekend," said Mills. "It was good to take out the top seed in one of our own guys and then beat Hamdy on his home court to win the finals."

On the doubles side of play, Muchynski and Grant Fleming made it to the finals of their bracket, but because of rain delays on Friday, there was not enough time to finish out the final match. Nick Buckley and Tom Pham made it to the semifinals in doubles before falling to top seeded Blake Wardman and Robert Zacks of Cal Poly (8-5).
