SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Thursday began the Battle of the Bay Classic qualifying rounds where the Santa Clara men's tennis team went 3-0 on the day. Freshmen Tom Pham, Grant Fleming, and Nick Buckley helped the Broncos to a perfect day to start the tournament. The Classic features the top singles players and doubles teams from five Division I Bay Area schools: Santa Clara, USF, California, Stanford, and Saint Mary's.
To start the day off, Tom Pham and Grant Fleming grabbed two hard fought singles victories. Pham defeated Sam Ecker of Stanford in decisive fashion, winning 6-3, 6-4. Fleming followed in suit defeating William Schumacher of USF in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-2.
In doubles play, Pham and Nick Buckley teamed up to down Stanford's Ted Kelly and Sam Ecker, 8-1.
The Broncos are back in action at the Battle of the Bay Friday with the first singles serve set for 10 a.m., followed by doubles beginning at 2:30 p.m. The quarterfinals and semifinals for the singles bracket will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively. Doubles semifinals will follow at 3 p.m. Sunday's finals action begins at 11 a.m.
